Seeing Atlanta Memorials: Student Perspectives

Amy Durrell

Founder of History Afoot Atlanta, Amy Durrell approaches history with a curiosity about landscape and learning about life in that landscape. Amy has led tours by foot and by bicycle, exploring the city with many different groups since 1987.  She is interested in Atlanta stories and exploring questions including the stories of residential areas, seeing the genesis of Civil Rights activism and remembering the role of women in the city. Amy’s interest is Public History and she completed Georgia State University’s Masters of Heritage Preservation program with a focus on stories of Georgia.

Eris Weiss

Eris Weiss is a senior at Georgia State University majoring in Interdisciplinary Studies with a concentration in Environmental Science. Following suit with their education, they have a deep personal interest in urban studies, sustainability, and geospatial and policy analysis. They plan to continue their education through an urban studies masters’ program and hope to work as an urban planner.

Jared Shanklin, GSU

Jared Shanklin is a sophomore at Georgia State University, majoring in History with a Pre-Law concentration. His academic interests include civil rights history and global civil rights and justice, reflecting a passion for understanding historical struggles for equality and their impact on contemporary society. With aspirations to become an attorney, he aims to use his education to advocate for social justice and equity on a global scale.

Heather Meadows-Adamson 

Heather Meadows-Adamson is a graduate of the Master’s in Heritage Preservation program at GSU with a focus on Public History. She has worked with the National Park Service, the Atlanta History Center, the Wren's Nest, and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. She is currently part of the Communications and Engagement team at Central Atlanta Progress.
