Jonathan Valdez is the Academic Programs Specialist for the Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS) at the University of Michigan. He received a BA in Asian Studies and an MA in Liberal Arts and Sciences from San Diego State University and has been actively involved in Southeast Asian Studies and Asian American studies since 2006.

Talk Description: This talk will focus on how to use the medium of graphic novels to teach history and culture of different Southeast Asian countries. Explored in this talk are how the following graphic novels/graphic histories: The Golden Voice by Gregory Cahill and Kat Baumann; The Great Hanoi Rat Hunt: Empire, Disease, and Modernity in French Colonial Vietnam by Michael Vann and Liz Clarke use different elements of comics to discuss Cambodian and Vietnamese history.
