Teaching and Learning about Africa in Georgia: Maximizing the Benefits and Impacts of GASI

11:30am-12:30pm, Apr 4 2025, Room 344

The Georgia African Studies Initiative (GASI), launched in February 2025, and housed within Atlanta Global Studies Center, is a collaboration among Georgia colleges and universities to promote Africa-focused educational programs that are beneficial to the state of Georgia. A major goal of this novel initiative is the identification and harnessing of available human and institutional resources, within participating institutions, for increased Africa-focused teaching, research, and programming across the state of Georgia.

The panel will consist of administrators and senior Africanists from the five founding institutions and other Georgia Universities and Colleges. Amongst other things, the panel will discuss the objectives, implementation plans, and anticipated challenges for the new initiative. The panelists will also identity and begin the tentative mapping of resources and opportunities that participating institutions can bring to bear in the effort to collaboratively maximize the benefits and impact of this state-wide initiative on Africa-focused pedagogy, programming, and research across the State of Georgia.
